What can I say?



Well, here I am with a lot on my mind and too little time to say it all. What a disappointment concerning the incredible concern the Government has shown about the drug problem in SA. The summit was just another bit of window dressing. Why do I say this? Well after having sent letters off to the various relevant Ministers in which I touched on some critical issues they need to take note of, nothing has been heard of them since. Not even an acknowledgment of receipt! Maybe it would be worthwhile politicizing these matters via the DA and other political opponents to the ANC, but I don't think that will have much impact either. 

Let me share some of my thoughts on some of the issues I have sent them;

1. First of all we need to set up courts dedicated to deal with drug matters. This is because the enforcement of certain laws is not common knowledge with most magistrates and public prosecutors. The laws are there on the lawbooks but they do not know how to apply it.
2. We need a special police task force who are properly trained in legal procedures and are not open to bribery. They must be an elite group who take pride in what they do and who should get paid very well to counter offers from dealers.
3. We need a network of private informers who can infiltrate drug syndicates, preferably ex-addicts and dealers, who will work very closely with specially appointed handlers from the above group of SAP task force.
4. The rehab centres need to establish and interim holding facility that will act as a "soft jail" concept. This is to teach people in therapy the consequences of not complying with authority and rules in rehab facilities.Runaways need to be locked up in isolation cells for instance or put in ankle-chains when re-arrested.
5. The public need information of how to have a family member "committed" by court order who is a danger to themselves and the community.
6. The SAP need to establish a separate data-base for drug offences that will link up with traffic-related offences.
7. Drug tests should be enforced at all schools on an ad-lib basis
8. Drug test should be done on all road-traffic victims at hospital casualties and mortuaries to gain a proper statistic on drug related accidents.
9. Long distance truckers should be randomly tested for stimulants and dagga by traffic officers. Their employers should be heavily fined.    

We as the public should unite our voice towards Government as our future is at stake as well as our lives when we drive on any public road. Our children and grand-children are at risk when they go to public and even private schools. We are not even safe in our own homes due to suburban crime, most of which is drug related. During my many visits to correctional facilities I speak to inmates on the reason for their jail term more than 80% where under the influence of drugs when they committed their crimes.
